Choosing a Trainer

A properly adjusted dog is a happy, well behaved, anxiety free animal and a true, trusted companion.

Unfortunately for many people, getting to this level of relationship with their dog can be long and difficult at best, and sometimes... next to impossible. This last statement can be justified, by observing how many animals are adopted or needlessly destroyed at our nations shelters ever year.

Dog training can be the solution to at least 50% of this problem. However, finding a program that truly works can be a daunting task.

To that end, do you use clicker training, gentle leaders, food, choke chains, harnesses, long leads, training sticks, etc., etc., etc? Choosing a trainer can be a mind boggling decision, and have serious effects on your dog, should you choose incorrectly.

Sometimes Dog trainers are worlds apart in their philosophy, and this only adds to an owners frustration, when trying to pick the best education for their pet.

Ask Questions !!!!

There are so many different dog training programs available today. You really need to thoroughly investigate before you make a decision to enroll in one. Different trainers have different ideas on what proper training is, and what level of training is needed. Some "end results" are very different.

Here are some questions you should ask a potential trainer. These questions will help make the decision easier for you, and your dog.

  • What qualifications do you have?
  • How many years have you been training?
  • Can I have some professional and client referrals?
  • Can you provide proof of insurance?
  • Do you absolutely guarantee your program?
  • Does your guarantee come in writing?
  • Exactly what do you guarantee?
  • Are your methods humane?
  • Do you have weekly assignments and goals? If you don't meet them, do I get extra training for free?
  • Is your program an on-leash program or will my dog respond when off leash?
  • Will I need more training later? If so, is additional training extra?
  • Is your program a total training program, i.e. problem solving, off/on leash obedience, temperament training, general manners?
  • Are you qualified to address serious behavioral issues. What are your qualifications?
  • Can I speak to SEVERAL of your previous clients that you have "solved" similar behavioral issues with.
  • Exactly what do you teach? What behaviors can I be guaranteed my dog will be doing in say 2, 3, 4, 5 weeks?
  • If I am not 100% satisfied upon completion of the program will you refund my money?

By getting honest answers to these questions, you will be on your way to choosing the correct trainer for your best friend.
